The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are an order of queer and transgender nuns whose mission is to promote joy and fight stigmatic guilt. Originating in San Fransisco in 1979, the non-profit organization has used 'dragtivism' since its inception to advocate for queer rights and provide needed services to LGBT people. It was one of the first groups to advocate & fundraise for the AIDs crisis as well as being putting out the first queer safe-sex pamphlet. The order is religiously unaffiliated, but uses the aesthetics of religion to challenge social expectations and reframe popular narratives concerning queer issues.
