The Great Purge was a brutal and ruthless campaign organized by Joseph Stalin. Between 1936 and 1938, the Soviet dictator ordered the execution of hundreds of thousands of Russians. Stalin believed that numerous political, military and intellectual circles were conspiring to overthrow his government. The purge also involved the murders and jailing of peasants, ethnic minorities, artists, and scientists. The Moscow trials were the most notable events of the purge. These publicized trials saw the execution of several high-ranking communists who were accused of treason.
