Also known as Midsummer, summer solstice (meaning ‘sun-stopping’), occurs when the two poles of the Earth have their maximum tilt towards the Sun. This event occurs twice every year, once in each of the two Hemispheres - Northern and Southern. During the summer solstice, the Sun is at its highest position and the day sees the longest daylight. It occurs in summer - that is, in June (between June 20 and June 22) in the Northern Hemisphere and in December (between December 20 and December 23) in the Southern Hemisphere. In many countries, the summer solstice has been marked as a significant event with various festivals and rituals being held.
