The Alchemist by the Brazilian author, Paulo Coelho, was first published in 1988. The book is about the journey of a shepherd boy named Santiago, who has recurring prophetic dreams of discovering a treasure in the Egyptian pyramids. When he tells his dream to an old woman, who is a fortune teller, she says that his dream would come true. Santiago, thus, starts his journey to Egypt. He meets interesting people on the way, including an alchemist, who teaches him to realize and recognize his true self. Although originally written in Portuguese, the novel attained the position of a widely translated international bestseller.
