In the 5th century BC, Greek Historian Herodotus shared in the book Histories details about the Babylonian marriage market. According to Herodotus, young unmarried women were ranked according to their looks and auctioned off publicly as brides. In his account, Herodotus explains that an auctioneer would get each of the women to stand up one by one, and he would put her up for sale. This custom inspired the 19th-century British painter Edwin Long to produce his famous artwork ‘The Babylonian Marriage Market.’
