During the Baroque era, many royal courts in Europe created places for small orchestras composed of a maximum of 25 instrumentalists. The orchestra provided entertainment for those that could afford it. By the late 18th century, the orchestra was mainly focussed on the string family. The string group was supported by instruments like the organ or the harpsichord to fill out the harmonies where necessary. Bassoons, oboes, flute, recorder or horn were also used to add to the color of the music. This sound illustrates the uniqueness of the Baroque period.
