The Battle of the Nile is also called the Battle of Aboukir. It took place on the 1st and 2nd of August 1798 in Aboukir Bay near Alexandria, Egypt, and was fought between the French fleet and the British fleet. The French fleet was under the command of Admiral François-Paul Brueys D'Aigalliers. The British fleet was under the leadership of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson. Brueys assumed the British would not attack so late in unknown shallow waters. Nelson's battleships snaked through a narrow gap between the foremost French ships and the shore. Brueys watched the destruction of his fleet. He died when the flagship L'Orient exploded.
