The ceremony of coronation took place on December 2nd, 1804 at Notre-Dame Cathedral. There were 500 musicians and singers. Napoleon and Josephine entered Notre-Dame under the symphony La Marche of Jean-François Le Sueur. The ceremony started with the blessing of the crowns by Pope Pius VII. Napoleon took the crown from the altar and placed it on his head. Then, he went back to the altar and replaced the crown with the laurel wreath made of gold which was similar to the type of laurel worn by the Roman Emperors. Napoleon took up the Charlemagne crown again, walked up to Josephine and crowned her.
