The Gates of Hell also known as Darvaza gas crater is located in the Karakum desert in Turkmenistan. In 1971, a team of Russian geologists was exploring the grounds that surround the village of Darvaza when their drilling rig accidentally hit a cavern of natural gas. The ground collapsed causing poisonous gas to come out of the hole. The geologist decided to set the crater on fire, hoping that the gas would burn off in a few days. It is still burning today. The hole is 230 feet wide.
