The Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) is a mountain range that is located in the Atlantic Ocean. It's mostly underwater, however in some areas the MAR forms land as volcanic islands. It was formed as a result of the motion between the North American Plate and Eurasian Plate and the motion between Africa and South America plates. As these plates are moving further from each other, the mantle rises below the ridge, the pressure decreases and the hot rocks partly melts. This process can lead to basaltic volcanoes.
