An icon of French Romanticism, The Raft of the Medusa which was originally titled Scène de Naufrage (Shipwreck Scene) – is an oil painting by the French Romantic painter and lithographer Théodore Géricault. The Raft of the Medusa depicts a flash from the aftermath of the wreck of the French naval frigate Méduse, that ran aground off the coast of today’s Mauritania on 2nd July 1816. 3 days later on July 5, 1816, 147 individuals set adrift on a hastily created raft; everyone died except 15 in the 13 days before their rescue and people who survived endured starvation and dehydration and practiced cannibalism.
