Dolphins communicate in a variety of ways; however, the primary mean of communication is through sounds. The whistle allows the dolphin to identify himself and to maintain physical contact with other dolphins. When a dolphin is in danger, his whistles are loud. Apart from whistles, dolphins use other sounds to communicate. Pulsed yelps can be heard during courtship, and a buzzing click-trains are emitted when an aggressive confrontation occurs. According to scientists, the sounds are produced by air movements in the nasal passage. The sounds travel five times faster through water than through air.
