When the United States was formed in 1776, more than 40,000 people loyal to the Crown fled to Quebec and Nova Scotia. They were called "Loyalists" and left to the oppression of the American Revolution. The Loyalists included Mohawk Indians, Dutch, Germans, British, Scandinavian and other origins. About 3,000 freedmen, enslaved people, and black loyalists arrived in Nova Scotia.
